What does a boat detail include?
Boat detailing is finish work first and cleaning second. The gelcoat is the boat’s only real defense against ultraviolet light and water, and everything else in the job supports it.
A full detail from Shazam Detailing typically includes:

Why does gelcoat oxidize on Tennessee lake boats?
Gelcoat is a pigmented polyester resin surface, not paint. Ultraviolet light gradually breaks down the resin, releasing loose pigment at the surface. That is oxidation: the chalky film that dulls color, makes dark hulls look gray, and comes off on a towel.
Middle Tennessee boats get a heavy dose of what drives it. Summer sun on an open lake is direct and long, and most boats here sit uncovered on a lift, a trailer, or an open slip for months. A boat that lives outdoors year-round can go visibly chalky in two to three seasons.
The good news is that oxidation is a surface condition until it is not. Compounding removes the degraded layer, polishing brings back clarity, and a wax or sealant slows the cycle from restarting. Boats that are protected once or twice a year rarely need heavy correction at all, which is the cheapest version of this service.
What causes the brown stain along the waterline?
Lake water leaves a band. On Old Hickory, Percy Priest, Center Hill, Cordell Hull, Tims Ford, and Kentucky Lake, that band is usually a mix of mineral deposits, tannins from decaying vegetation, algae, and silt that bonds into porous gelcoat right where the hull meets the water.
It does not come off with soap, because it is not sitting on the surface, it is in it. Hull stains need a dedicated treatment that dissolves the deposit, followed by a decision about whether the gelcoat underneath also needs polishing. Left alone through several seasons, the stain darkens and the gelcoat in that band ages faster than the rest of the hull.

Aluminum pontoon tubes are their own specialty. They stain and oxidize in a way that fiberglass does not, and they respond to a different chemistry entirely. Aggressive acid work on tubes can leave streaking that is harder to fix than the stain it removed, so the sequence and dwell time matter.
When should a boat be detailed in Middle Tennessee?
Twice a year is the working baseline, tied to the local season.
Spring commissioning, before the first weekend out: wash off winter storage grime, address any mildew that appeared under the cover, correct the gelcoat, and protect it before peak sun. A boat that starts the season protected holds up far better through July and August.
End-of-season, before winter layup: this is the one owners skip and regret. Stains, algae, and organic residue left on gelcoat for five months keep working the whole time. How long does gelcoat protection last?
It depends on what is applied and how the boat is stored. A traditional marine wax on a boat that lives outdoors in Tennessee sun is a seasonal item, typically reapplied at least twice a year. Sealants generally last longer, and a boat kept covered or in a building holds protection much longer than one on an open lift.
Can you get mildew and odor out of boat upholstery?
Usually. Marine vinyl mildew that is on the surface and in the seams cleans well with proper chemistry and agitation, followed by a conditioner suited to marine vinyl. Growth that has gone through into the foam beneath may not fully release, and cracked or failing vinyl is an upholstery repair rather than a cleaning job. That assessment gets made before the work, not after.
Do you clean boat trailers too?
Yes. If the boat is on its trailer, the trailer gets washed and the wheels cleaned as part of the visit. Trailers that get dunked in lake water regularly collect the same staining and mineral deposits the hull does, and they are easy to include while the crew is already there.

Canvas and clear vinyl are handled as part of interior and topside work. Clear vinyl in particular needs gentle products, because the wrong cleaner will haze or craze it permanently.
